What’s your essential business philosophy? Focus on the few things that you do best (two, three at most) and go big in those areas with all of your resources.

What are the smartest and dumbest business decisions you’ve made?Smartest: In 1988, I quit my first job out of college and joined Metro Commercial.

Dumbest: In 2007, I worked too many hours, flew too many miles, took time away from my family, let my health go and came close to a breakdown.

What’s the best way to keep a competitive edge? First: Being selective and doing your homework before making commitments. Being quick to say “no” and slow to say “yes” is something I learned from the book, Essentialism.

Second: Read, read and read.
